Destination: Victoria Australia * Things to see Tungamah Small wheat town with some historic buildings The enormous wheat silos which overlook Tungamah give an accurate impression of the town's economic focus. It is located 243 km north-east of Melbourne via Benalla which is 48 km to the south. Tungamah was gazetted in 1875. Things to see: Historic buildings A number of the town's buildings date from the late 19th century. The strongest statement of its early solidity is the enormous two-storey hotel at the main intersection (cnr Barr and Middledon Sts) with its fine wrought-iron verandahs. Adjacent the hotel, in Barr St, is the Soldiers' Memorial Hall and at its rear is an antiquated log hut of historic interest. Just up the hill from the hotel, in Barr St, are the town's three churches - Uniting, Anglican and the dark brick form of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. Just to the east of the hotel, in Middledon St, is the former masonic hall (1889) and opposite is a building with beautifully restored woodwork and windows which now functions as a museum storing items associated with local history. Further along Middledon St is the former courthouse. Also of interest are some attractive cottages with ornate cast-iron verandah valances and picket fences.
