The College was founded in 1473 as Katharine Hall by Robert Wodelarke, Provost of the neighbouring King’s College. It was renamed as St Catharine Hall after the martyred St Catharine of Alexandria. Undergraduates were admitted in the 16th century and the College was expanded in size in the 17th and 18th centuries and an unusual three-sided court was completed. An important 18th century benefactor was Mary Ramsden. In 1880 the College adopted its present name and resisted amalgamation with the adjacent and well-endowed, King’s College. Its alumni include John Addenbrooke who founded the hospital in Cambridge, the stage director Peter Hall and the TV presenter Jeremy Paxman. The chapel was built in 1704 and is much admired for its wainscoting and Corinthian altar-piece. The picture was drawn and engraved by J and H S Storer.
