Prince Frederick Augustus; 16 August 1763–5 January 1827) was a member of the Hanoverian and British Royal Family, and second son of King George III. From 1820 until his death in 1827, he was the heir presumptive to his elder brother, King George IV, both to the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Hanover. He was responsible for major reforms in the British Army during the early 19th century that resulted in the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo, and also founded the Sandhurst military training college which promoted the professional, merit-based training of future commissioned officers. He was the inspiration for the song 'The grand old Duke of York' The inscription under the statue reads: "Field Marshal His Royal Highness Frederick Duke Of York and Albany KG Commander in Chief of the British Army".
