This image is exclusive to Alamy. Hunslet 0-6-0 saddle tank Austerity class built 1950, number 3694 "Whiston". One of 484 locomotives built to the Austerity design hurriedly developed during World War 2, "Whiston" was built by the Hunslet Engine Co of Leeds in 1950 the UK. "Whiston" was delivered new in October 1950 to the National Coal Board at Haydock Colliery in Lancashire, before moving in April 1951 to Cronton Colliery. "Whiston" remained here until moving in 1961 to Bold Colliery near St Helens, Merseyside. "Whiston" ended its working life in mid 1981 and it was bought privately for preservation, arriving at Foxfield Railway in 1983. A full overhaul then took place and "Whiston" returned to steam in April 1986. It is painted in the lined light green NCB livery it carried at Bold Colliery. The Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre is based on part of an old Ministry of Defence site on the outskirts of Ruddington in Nottinghamshire. The site includes steam and diesel locomotive and rolling stock workshops, local historic buses, a miniature railway, cafeteria and shops. The Great Central Railway (Nottingham) is a heritage railway, approximately 10 miles long, between Ruddington Fields and Loughborough South Junction. It consists of lines previously part of the Great Central Main Line and a Ministry of Defence branch line. The line has stations at Ruddington Fields (within the Heritage Centre), Rushcliffe Halt and East Leake. There is no station at Loughborough. The railway is currently not connected to the more established Great Central Railway in Leicestershire, although there are long term plans to reunite the two lines
