The first War of Independence against the East India Company started from this Palace in Attingal, Kerala. Attingal Palace had an important role in the history of Kerala. It played a significant role in the growth of the Tranvancore Dynasty. Attingal Palace is one of the 30 traditional Palaces constructed by the royal family of erstwhile Travancore, after the 18th century. Most of the palaces have now disappeared. One of the existing palaces is Attingal Palace. Beautiful murals adorn the walls of the palace. Travancore was a matrilineal kingdom ruled by the senior most male member of the royal family. The female members stayed at the Attingal palace. The first ever united rebellion against the British began here. The Attingal Palace gained prominence in the 14th century when Udaya Marthanda Varma ascended the throne of Travancore. He adopted two princesses from the royal family of the Kolathiris of North Malabar. A palace for each one of them was built by the king at Attingal and Kunnummel. British East India Company face the first war of Indian Independence from this Palace. This historical Palace still stay proudly in the heart of Attingal Town, Kerala (India).
