A shaft of light illuminates part of the floor and walls of the Lower Antelope Canyon. Antelope Canyon is a series of slot canyons located on Navajo land near Paige, Arizona. The slot canyons are carved from Navajo Sandstone when rainwater from the nearby basin runs through the walls of the canyon. As the water is forced through the narrow walls of the canyon, it picks up tremendous speed and carves the soft sandstone walls. This gives the walls of Antelope Canyon their characteristic flowing appearance. During the dry season when tourists are allowed into the canyon, it is not uncommon to see stranded tree trunks wedged between the walls of the canyon a hundred feet or more above the ground where rushing water from the previous season's rainstorms carried it.
