This relief depicts a portable charkha, a hand spinning wheel for cotton designed by Mahatma Gandhi and used as a symbol of resistance to British rule. The spinning wheel is shown symbolically on the Indian National flag. One of the 12 chairs of 'The Jurors' public art installation (CPDA) at Runnymede Meadows where the Magna Carta was sealed in 1215. The artwork was commissioned by Surrey County Council to mark the 800th anniversary of the Great Charter. The artist & sculptor Hew Locke created 12 bronze chairs decorated with imagery and symbols of current and past struggles for the rule of law, equal rights and freedom. The artwork was inaugurated by HRH Prince William during the Magna Carta 800th Anniversary celebrations on 15th June 2015. Cast at Meltdowns Foundry and assembled by Situations Art Organization.
