The Volkerschlachtdenkmal, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations, which is situated to the south of the city centre in Probstheida. The monument was inaugurated on 18th October 1913, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig and was attended by Kaiser Wilhelm 11, the King of Saxony, Friedrich August 111, all the princes of Germany and representatives from Austria, Russia and Sweden. The battle was fought by the allies near Leipzig on October 16-19th 1813 against the troops of Napoleon 1. The monument covers an area of 80, 000 m2, including its outside grounds. It was designed by a Berlin architect, Bruno Schmitz and 26, 500 blocks of granite porphory were used. The guardian figures on thecupola and the archangel Michael are 12m tall. Four figures 9.60m high grace the Hall of Fame. The viewing platform at a height of more than 90m provides a superb view over Leipzig's city centre and the surroundings.
