Photograph by David Coleman. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, located in West Potomac Park next to the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., is a national monument honoring the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Opened to the public in 2011, the memorial's centerpiece is a 30-foot-tall granite statue of Dr. King, emerging from a "Stone of Hope, " which appears to have been pushed forward from a "Mountain of Despair." This design is inspired by a line from King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech: "Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope." The memorial covers four acres and includes the iconic statue, an inscription wall featuring 14 quotes from Dr. King's speeches and writings, and 182 cherry blossom trees. The statue, facing southeast across the Tidal Basin toward the Jefferson Memorial, was created by Chinese sculptor Lei Yixin. The memorial's location on the National Mall places it in a direct line between the Lincoln Memorial, where King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech, and the Jefferson Memorial. Managed by the National Park Service, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is open 24 hours a day and receives millions of visitors annually. It is particularly popular during the National Cherry Blossom Festival in spring when the surrounding cherry trees are in bloom. The memorial serves as a powerful reminder of Dr. King's message of hope, justice, democracy, and love, continuing to inspire visitors from around the world.
