The controversial Three Gorges Dam site located close to the town of Yichang in Hubei Province was first conceived by Sun Yat-sen in the 1919. Work finally started in 1994. By June 2003 the first stage of the flooding was complete. The dam will be at full capacity by 2009, by which time a reservoir will stretch over 600 kilometres west to the inland city of Chongqing. At almost 2.3 kilometres long and 185 metres high it will be the largest dam in the world, and one of the largest manmade structures on earth. Reasons for construction include flood control, great possibilities for generation of electricity, reduced pollution and to deepen the Yangzi River to make it navigable for larger ships within the three gorges, thus pushing forward development of China’s inland cities. Criticisms have included siltaton, erosion of natural landcapes and possible earthquakes, the relocation of over two million people, national security, the flooding of valuable archaeological sites and the possible extinction of wildlife for example breeds of dolphin and sturgeon unique to the region.
