The Gatekeeper, (Pyronia tithonus), also known as the Hedge Brown, is an easily recognizable butterfly. Widespread in southern Britain, its range has extended northwards in recent years. It is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan ranging from around 45 to 55 millimeters. Its wings are primarily orange-brown, and they have distinctive dark spots and bands that give them a mottled appearance. The outer edges of its wings are bordered by a series of small, dark "eye" spots. The males and females of this species are similar in appearance, although females tend to have slightly larger and more rounded wings. Gatekeeper butterflies are often found in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, meadows, gardens, woodland clearings, hedgerows, and along the edges of paths and roads. They are active during the warm summer months, typically from July to August. They prefer sunny and sheltered locations, and feed on a variety of nectar-rich flowers. Gatekeepers lay their eggs on various species of grasses, on which the caterpillars feed.
