Lana‘i was formerly nicknamed "The Pineapple Isle" because of the extensive pineapple cultivation on the island — at one time it was the largest pineapple plantation in the world with 20, 000 pineapple-producing acres and over one thousand workers and their families. In my opinion, Lana‘i pineapple was the tastiest grown anywhere but sadly, it became non-cost-effective and production was shifted to other parts of the world. Now Lana‘i maintains only about 100 acres under cultivation to supply the needs of island residents. As we approached Lahaina harbor, I spotted Mo‘olele the double-hulled sailing canoe that I had spotted earlier in the day as we sailed over to Lana“i. A nice welcome home.
