The cloisters in the abbey of Cadouin in the south of the Dordogne region of France. The abbey church dates was completed in 1154 but the cloisters were not built until the end of the 15th century, thanks to the generosity of Louis X1. They are built in the Flamboyant Gothic style and work continued until the middle of the 16th century. They suffered damage during the Wars of Religion and the Revolution but were saved and restored in the 19th century. The Holy Shroud of Cadouin was first mentioned in 1214 and was believed to be the cloth wrapped around Christ's head. Many came to venerate the shroud including Richard the Lionheart. In 1934 the myth was disproved and it was dated to between 1094 and 1101 and was of Egyptian origin. The bishop at that time had pilgrimages to Cadouin discontinued! Today Cadouine abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
