U.S. retail giant Walmart announced the closure of one of its Chinese stores in central Chinas Henan province, triggering a protest held by its employees over unemployment compensation. A group of employees from the supermarket of Walmart on Jinghua Road in Luoyang city gathered outside the store by holding up banners and placards on Thursday (5 December 2013) to protest against the closure and the way the Walmart side had calcuated for compensation, and demand proper allocation. The store, scheduled to close on December 19, opened on 1 May 2007 and was the first store of Walmart in Henan province. The closure was part of the change in the expansion strategy of Walmart in the third- and fourth-tier cities in China, according to Walmart Regional PR Director Li Yingnan. The retailer has eight other stores in operation in Henan province but still had no plan of opening a new outlet in Luoyang after the closure.
