On Jan. 18, 2024, Capt. M.W. Meno presented BU3 Corey Smith with a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal at quarters for muster for meritorious service. While serving as builder third class for the United States Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Four (NMCB-4) in October 2023, Petty Officer Smith’s call to action resulted in saving a human life at Pittsburgh International Airport. Upon hearing a call for a cardiopulmonary resuscitation-qualified person, he immediately rushed to the scene and identified a victim collapsed on the ground, not breathing and without a pulse. Petty Officer Smith directed someone to grab an automated external defibrillator and another to call 911 before beginning cardiopulmonary resuscitation. At roughly compression 47, the victim regained consciousness, and he stayed with him until being relieved by paramedics. Petty Officer Smith’s superlative performance, steadfast perseverance, and outstanding devotion to duty reflected credit on him, upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
