SOUTH QUEENSFERRY EDINBURGH SCOTLAND AUGUST 8 The Burry Man Alan Reid stands in the bar of the Queensferry Arms in South Queensferry near Edinburgh on August 8 1997 Standing very still with his arms extended horizontally at his sides he holds a cigarette with an ever lengthening ash in his lips It is a position he will be stuck in for the next eight hours He is wearing a flannel undergarment and a pair of army boots Around him his assistants are slowly covering him with thousands of sticky burrs from the burdock plant A balaclava with small holes for his eyes and his mouth goes over his head and this too is given a covering of burrs Finally a hat decorated with flowers is placed on his head Alan Reid is the Burry Man With two helpers who literally support him he goes out into the High Street Unable to move more than a foot at a time he resembles the mummy from an old Boris Karloff movie as he staggers slowly forward At a snails pace he is guided through the town making pre arranged stops every now and then for refreshment Little ladies stand by their front gates with trays of water and whiskey Through a straw the Burry Man sips his scotch Eight hours later and often a stone lighter the Burry Man can at last relieve himself back at the Queensferry Arms
