A manor house on the site was destroyed by the Scots in 1296. The core of the present castle is thought to have been constructed in the 14th Century with 4 towers joined by a curtain wall and surrounded by a ditch. After being badly damaged on the north side by cannon fire during the 1536 Pilgrimage of Grace there was substantial rebuilding during the reigns of Elizabeth and James I. There are substantial accretions and alterations dating from subsequent periods down to the 1920s. In 1982 the Earl of Tankerville sold the dilapidated castle to Sir Humphrey Wakefield who has continued with the rescue of the structure of the building ever since.
