. The sportsman's British bird book . ds appearto have reached Woburn, where they breed freely. They also breed near Wat-ford and other parts of Hert-fordshire, while from the Kentcentre these owls have colon-ised a considerable portionof the south-east of England. That the species finds condi-tions in this country suitableto its mode of life is demon-strated by the circumstancethat pairs have nested andreared their young in several English parks. There was no record of the occurrence of the speciesin either Scotland or Ireland during the nineteenth century. Little owls are far from being solely nocturnal birds, and may attimes be seen hunting for insects, which constitute their chief food, in broad daylight. The nest is a heap ofrubbish in some hollow tree, upon which are deposited in April orMay from four to six white eggs measuring between 1^ and i^ inchesin lenerth.. LITTLK OWL. 420 PICARIAN BIRDS As albino owls are rare, it is interesting to note that one whitespecimen of the present species was obtained at Cremona about theyear 1900, while a second example, which was white with buffmarkings, was seen in North Holland in 1905. While it is certain that none of them can be included in any of theforegoing groups, it is equallyclear that they cannot beclassed among the true perch-ing-birds, or Passeres.
