Alter Garten - Old Gardens The originally marshy land in front of the castle island was named as such for the first time in 1708 after a new garden - the Castle Gardens (seehere) had been laid out. Since the 19th century, the spot has been flanked by prestigious buildings such as the Mecklenburg State Theatre, the State Museum, the "Alter Palais" - Old Palace - as well as the "Kollegiengebäude I" - the seat of today's State Chancellery. It is here, against the magnificent backdrop of the city's most beautiful venue for events, that the annual castle festival productions, among other highlights, take place with the motto "Theatre under the Stars".
