Photograph by David Coleman. Historic Jamestowne, located on Jamestown Island in Virginia, stands as a testament to the birth of English America and the complex interactions between European settlers, Native Americans, and enslaved Africans that shaped the early colonial period. Established in 1607 by the Virginia Company of London, Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in North America, predating the Pilgrims' arrival at Plymouth Rock by 13 years. The site, jointly administered by the National Park Service and Preservation Virginia, offers visitors a unique blend of ongoing archaeological excavations and historical interpretation. The Jamestown Rediscovery project, initiated in 1994, has unearthed over two million artifacts, dramatically enhancing our understanding of life in early colonial America. The Jamestown Church, with its 17th-century tower, stands as one of the oldest English-built structures in the United States. Near the church lies the site where archaeologists discovered the remains of four of Jamestown's early leaders, a find that has provided invaluable insights into the lives and deaths of the colony's elite. The Archaearium, a modern museum facility, houses many of the most significant artifacts discovered at Jamestown. These items, ranging from military equipment to personal possessions, offer tangible connections to the individuals who lived and died in this challenging frontier environment. Jamestown's history is not solely one of English colonization. The site also tells the story of the Powhatan people, who had inhabited the area for thousands of years before the settlers' arrival.
