Jun 09, 2006; Bangkok, THAILAND; The royal barge procession is performed in Bangkok, Thailand, as part of the celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the much loved king of Thailand's ascent to the throne. The royal barge procession has been a part of thai tradition since the Ayuthya period (13th-17th century). It takes part to commemorate special royal events such as when a new monarch is crowned or an anniversary such as this one. As part of the 60th anniversary to the throne of the King of Thailand these barges will perform in front of many visiting foreign Monarchs and the King of Thailand. This will take place at night on the 12th of june 2006. Before the official event are several full dress rehearsals to give the general public a chance to see the barges. Now the fleet consists of 52 barges including 4 royal barges manned by 20082 members of the royal thai navy. The barges themselves are long narrow wooden boats with two rows of men paddling. in the center is a covered area traditionally to carry Royals and other important people. Each end of the boat is raised and often adorned with elaborate designs depicting animals and other creatures. A variety of vessels make up the 52 boat fleet. Each boat reflects the artistic and cultural beliefs of Thailand: the relationship between the individual and society, man and nature and between human existence and his personal beliefs. Before after and during the ceremony each man wears a special uniform and must follow certain rituals. The boats follow a route along Bangkok's main waterway, the Chao praya river. They will pass important well know landmarks such as rama 8 bridge, the grand palace and the temple of dawn. The Thai people are united by there love and spiritual and social reliance on King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The royal barge procession is an event for all thai people to enjoy and celebrate the anniversary. All along the banks of the river are lined yellow (the royal colour). Mandatory Credit: Photo by Ian
