Katherine's Cross was erected in the 1770s to commemorate the enforced stay at Ampthill Castle of Catherine of Aragon during her divorce proceedings at Dunstable in 1533. The castle was in fact a manor built in the early 1400s by Sir John Cornwall, later Lord Fanhope but was acquired by Henry VIII in 1524. It was built around a rectangular courtyard on a hilltop site between Katherine's Cross and the Ampthill Camp Memorial Cross and was used by King Henry for hunting in the fresh air away from London. After Catherine's removal, Henry brought his new queen Anne Boleyn here. By 1555 it was in a state of disrepair and was finally demolished in 1649. Katherine's Cross hit the national headlines in February 1982 when the golden hare prize in artist Kit Williams's hit treasure hunt book 'Masquerade' was discovered buried in its shadow. He had hidden it there in August 1979.
