Virdi was sacked while working at Ealing police station for sending racist hate mail to other officers. * 01/09/2000 The Metropolitan Police police service was accused of not learning the lessons of the Stephen Lawrence inquiry, after Deputy Assistant Commissioner John Grieve said he could not say sorry to Virdi, who won an employment tribunal against the force. Sgt Virdi was sacked in March after a four-week disciplinary hearing in which it was alleged that he sent racist hate mail to 13 of the 15 ethnic minority officers in the Ealing division, west London. Last month the tribunal found that there was no evidence that he sent the letters and concluded that Sgt Virdi was the subject of racial discrimination by the police force investigating him. 8/12/2000: Sergeant Virdi is expected to be awarded record damages after he was discriminated against by his employers for being Asian. Virdi is due to learn the outcome of an employment tribunal remedy hearing in Woburn Place, central London.
