Wellington's Obelisk in the Phoenix Park, Dublin City in Phoenix is at 62 metres (203 ft) tall, the largest obelisk in Ireland and Europe. It was built to commemorate the victories of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, born in County Meath to become a politician and general, also known as the 'Iron Duke'. The obelisk's four bronze plaques cast from cannons captured at Waterloo, outlines Wellington’s career. Designed by the architect Sir Robert Smirke, the foundation stone was laid in 1817 but the project ran out of construction funds three years later and remained unfinished until 1861.
