The outer face of Dun Grugaig Iron Age galleried dun, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK, cutting off a narrow, steep-side coastal promontory. The massive drystone wall has a solid base with a hollow upper storey. The centrally placed entrance passage has door checks & bar holes but no guard cells. Steps lead from the inner wall face to the upper level where there is a gallery with a chamber over the entrance passage. The inner wall face has a scarcement ledge 1m above present ground level which may have supported a wooden lean-to or balcony arrangement. The truncated triangular outer lintel stone & many of the basal stones are massive, the rest are flat slabs laid in level courses. The rest of the promontory was ringed by a lower wall or parapet. The promontory sides are sheer & 15m high, the approach from the adjoining mainland is down a long steep slope. This piece of walling has features found in broch towers, other galleried duns & the freestanding blockhouse at Clickhimmin, Shetland. The vulnerable standing walls were consolidated in 1998.
