The Full Moon and Mars rising into the southeast over the long abandoned grain elevator at Dorothy, Alberta, in the Red Deer River valley, Alberta. This was July 27, 2018, taken a few hours after a total lunar eclipse that was visible from the eastern hemisphere of the planet, but not from North America. This was also the night Mars was at its closest opposition since 2003. With both the Moon and Mars at opposition on the same night, they appeared relatively close together, though with Mars farther south in declination. This is a blend of 4 short exposures for the sky, to prevent the Moon and iridescent colours in the clouds from overexposing too much, and a long 8-second exposure for the ground to bring out detail in the shadows and backlit elevator. I blended the images with a combination of luminosity masks and hand-painted masks. HDR worked OK but left multiple edges on the moving clouds, Moon and Mars despite de-ghosting. Clouds hid Mars until only a few minutes before I took this set. And then I waited until the Moon was in cloud and Mars wasn’t in order to dim the disk of the Moon naturally. This is the type of scene the eye can take in very well but the camera has immense difficulty capturing without tricks like HDR or masking multiple exposures. So it is case of the Photoshop techniques being necessary just to recreate what the eye could see. All with the 50mm Sigma lens at f/2.8 on the Canon 6D MkII at ISO 400. The “Abandoned Places” filter with reduced intensity added with Luminar to the foreground.
