The area has been affected by numerous tropical storms and hurricanes, including Camille in 1969, Frederic in 1979, Elena in 1985, Georges in 1998, Ivan in 2004, and Katrina in 2005. Many of the most expensive vacation homes and rental houses are built on the vulnerable west end, which is virtually flat and unprotected by dunes. Erosion, storms, and sea-level rise are constant concerns. The island has been called "the canary in the coal mine" of climate change.
