Nzabake Suzan (33) is a participant in LWR’s REAL (Rural Economies and Agricultural Livelihoods) project in Kasese, Uganda. Here, starchy bananas, known locally as matooke, are steamed in their own leaves on an energy efficient stove given to Suzan’s family through the project. Before the project began, Suzan’s family of eight suffered a life of extreme poverty, living in a small mud shack and sleeping on the floor with very little to eat each day. Today, she credits the REAL project with her family’s drastic turnaround in circumstances. Her family’s yields on the cash crops of coffee and vanilla have more than tripled as a result of the trainings she’s received through the project – trainings on planning and timing and on the use of manure compost and organic pesticides. Other crops she grows like banana, casava, avocado and jack fruit are also growing in abundance after implementing the farming methods she’s learned. These crops are not just helping to feed her family, but are starting to be income generators as well. Today the family has built a new brick house with solar lighting and eats three meals a day.e. Because the Bible says you should ask God what you desire, and I would pray that he blesses me through my land and what is within should uplift me, ” says Suzan. “I really see that God is answering our prayers. I keep praying that God should continue to uplift me and bless my farm.” LWR REAL project – Kasese District, Uganda, East Africa. June 11, 2021 – photo by Jake Lyell.
