The parents of two siblings diagnosed with uremia are donating one kidney each to save their son and daughter's lives. According to Tencent News, the transplant operation between the mother and her son, 17-year-old Li Kai, was successfully carried out at the Armed Police General Hospital in Beijing Wednesday (14 January 2015) afternoon. The father and daughter, Li Min, will undergo the same surgery tomorrow. Kai was diagnosed with uremia, a complication of chronic kidney disease which causes a buildup of urea and other waste in the body, back in 2009. Li Min was diagnosed just three years later. The family, from Chengde, Hebei province, was set back hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt covering medical costs for their treatment. Last year, after their story was picked up by media, the Chinese Red Cross Foundation helped raise funds through public donations to pay for the family's operations. Kai, who has been out of school for years due to his illness, told reporters that he's most looking forward to going back after he recovers.
