HS2’s Delta Junction is a triangular section of the line, situated north of the HS2 Interchange Station in Solihull. It will enable trains to travel between London and Birmingham, Birmingham and Manchester, and directly between London and Manchester without stopping at Birmingham. It is made up of embankments, cuttings and a total of 13 viaducts taking 14km of high-speed tracks over motorways, local roads, existing rail lines, rivers and floodplains. The recently installed viaducts over the M42/M6 link roads are among the four composite viaducts to be constructed for the Delta Junction, alongside three low viaducts and six precast segmental viaducts. For the latter, work is being carried out on two construction sites on opposite ends of the junction. At the northern end, BBV is building the single-track Water Orton 1 and Water Orton 2 viaducts, which have a length of 1, 417m and 1, 311m respectively. Being constructed on the same site are the 471m long River Tame West – comprising a single track and a double track viaduct – and the 533m single track River Tame East viaducts. The remaining precast segmental viaducts are situated at the southern end of the junction. The 616m-long Coleshill West consists of a single track and two double tracks, while the Coleshill East is a single-track viaduct with a length of 592m.
