The Monument to the Fallen of Mentana and Monterotondo was commissioned by the Society of Garibaldi veterans in memory of the fallen soldiers supported by the Garibaldi themselves on 1867 in Mentana and Monterotondo, against the papal and French troops, in an attempt to make their way towards Rome. The competing sketches were exhibited at the Circolo degli Artisti in Florence in 1898 and, among them, the winner was the one proposed by the sculptor Oreste Calzolari (1852-1920), whose work was officially inaugurated on 27 April 1902. The sculptural group presents the figures of two Garibaldini: the first, standing, stretches the body and the look towards the enemy, against which stretches an arm armed with revolver, while with the other supporting the dying companion, reversed and abandoned, although still able to tighten the rod of the flag.
