The May Day sunrise and associated festivities herald fertility with unique customs and their Pagan roots going back to the Dark Ages. Villages up and down the country celebrate in their own traditional way. On the top of Painswick Beacon, just six miles from Gloucester, the Gloucestershire Morris Men welcomed first light with a dance. They were joined by friends from Stroud Morris Dancers, Miserden Morris and the all female dancers, Boss Morris, formed in 2015 with the aim of bringing folk dancing into the 21st century. Dawn was met with a blanket of cloud making for a murky start to the day but by sunrise at 5.40am the sun was breaking through. The revellers' celebrations were watched by a crowd of around thirty, keen to witness one of the county's ancient traditions at, 283 meters above sea level and with fresh blood from the likes of Boss Morris this folklore looks like it has a long future ahead
