The town hall is the seat of the political authorities of the Republic and Canton of Geneva . The origin of this building, initially modest, dates back to the xv th century . It was developed in stages between the xvi th century and the xviii th century, and again in the xix th and xx th centuries. From 1700, under the supervision of the architect Jean Vennes, helped by the mason-architect Moïse Ducommun, very important works were undertaken, including the construction of the south wing intended to receive the room of the Council of the Deux-Cents (while preserving the Baudet tower, a moment threatened of demolition), the installation of a new body of building to the east and the completion of the north wing. In the building’s Alabama Room, an 1872 international arbitration court ended a conflict between the United States of America and Great Britain. The first Geneva Convention, the founding act of the International Red Cross in 1864, was signed here.
