Dug and carved out of solid rocks with entrance that is accessible by walking, the chamber grave is one of the versions of traditional burial system in North Toraja and Tana Toraja in South Sulawesi province of Indonesia. It is quite different than burial sites on tourist destinations, where the coffin (traditionally called "erong") is often seen placed on cave on high cliff or hung on the cliff face. This form of burial (pictured) is called "liang pak", on which the grave site is carved at stone wall, according to a team of researchers led by Akin Duli (Hasanuddin University, Makassar) in their paper published on Proceeding of The 13th International Conference on Malaysia-Indonesia Relations, Dec 2019 (accessed through Research Gate). "The inner part (of the chamber grave) is a large hollow in various size according to the need and its mouth is smaller, usually 1 x 1 meter and has a cover made from wood. The body is put in a coffin or wrapped with cloth, and accompanied by burial provisions, either put inside or outside the coffin, " they wrote.
