Five years after Queen Victoria married Prince Albert in 1840, they bought Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. The Queen already knew the IOW from her childhood. Osborne was the monarch's 'cottage' in the country - a place to get away from the rigours of palace life in London. The Queen and her family spent a great deal of time here, especially in the summer. Work on development of the house - in time full replacement - was carried out by architect George Cubitt. He designed an Italianate house, with a pair of towers and grand interiors. The formal gardens are also Italianate. The terrace gardens have views down to the Solent. Queen Victoria died at Osborne on 22 January 1901 surrounded by her children. Her son, King Edward VII, gave Osborne House to the nation shortly afterwards. JMH0834
