The Panificio Automatico Continuo (Automatic Continuous Bakery) was built in 1925 designed by engineer Enrico Cardani and architect Mario Faravelli on behalf of the Consortium Company of the Municipality of Milan, Italy; it housed a large automatic bakery for the production of bread which produced 120 tons of bread a day and was one of the largest automatic bakeries in Europe. Today, after many years of disuse, it houses a large kitchen for the preparation of meals for school refectories. This building was also photographed by ph. Gabriele Basilico in 1978 for his book "Ritratti di fabbriche". At that time its appearance was a little different. In this suburbs of the Milan city, Italy, in 1978 the well-known Italian photographer Gabriele Basilico (1944-2013) shot many black and white pictures for his photobook "Ritratti di fabbriche" (Portraits of factories). The aim of the book was to measure the space and capture the particular architectural style of industrial buildings on the outskirts of Milan to give them an aesthetic dignity that can be perceived through the relationships between light and shadow that draw the volumes, shapes, space and its extension. The book is still considered a great classic of Italian architectural photography.
