This information panel, entitled 'Surveillance at the Border Area', reads: 'Some East Berlin residents supported the security agencies by working as informants and providing assistance. The secret police hired border informers ('Grenz-IM'), who monitored their neighbours and kept an eye out for strangers. Border troops and East German police had voluntary assistants that patrolled the border area, passed on information and helped apprehend fugitives during a border alarm.' The panel also displays a newspaper article (published 1/12/76) about a border troop voluntary assistant and photographs showing a voluntary assistant of the East German police supporting policemen and border soldiers (circa 1980); a border soldier and border assistant patrolling together in a garden community (September 1965); and General Baumgarten, commander of the border troops, decorating voluntary border assistants in September 1981.
