The fire started on April 19, 2020 near Kopytkowo. The surrounding population noticed a sudden escape of animals. The situation was very dynamic, because on Monday 20 April at 5 am it looked like to, the fire had been contained. Very large forces and measures were involved to control situations unfortunately strong winds led to the shift of the fire to the "Red Swampo"” area, which is a strict protection area, closed to any movement. As a result of the fire, several villages, including Kopytkowo and Dolistowo, were threatened. The area where the National Park is located is very difficult for this shifting of equipment and people during extinguishing is very complicated and time-consuming. The Polish army built special bridges that allowed the passage to the areas covered by the fire. The fire area is a low peatland whose annual growth is 1mm and is formed from the remains of plant materials. Such an area is created for thousands of years. The prevailing drought has a major impact on the situation in the National Park. At this point, about 1.5 meters of water are missing in the areas of the park. The area that has been burned is about 5, 300 hectares and the fires resulting from the fire will be estimated for a very long period. Biebrza National Park (BbPN) was created on the basis of the Regulation of the Council of Ministers of 9 September 1993 as the 18th Polish national park. Today, of the 23 Polish national parks, BbPN is the largest national park and one of the largest in Europe. The purpose of the Park is to protect the vast peatlands of the Biebrza Basin and a small part of the Sokolski Hills with a total area of 59, 223 hof ectars.
