Driven by economics, export, and international pressure, the government sanctioned the mass extermination of animals across the country, subsidying and paying farmers for every beast that was killed. Beasts suffering from foot and mouth can become immune, but the disease costs farmers more time and money to rear a fat animal, therefore in economic terms, and for international sales, Britain and other European countries chose to kill millions of animals.
