Philip Herbert (1584-1650), 4th Earl of Pembroke, whose Puritan sympathies prompted him to support Parliament during the English Civil War. Square detail of an original copperplate engraving by George Vertue (1683-1756), after a portrait by Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641). This engraving was first used in the 1740 edition of 'History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England' by Edward Hyde (1609-1674), Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to King Charles I, who was later raised to the peerage as 1st Earl of Clarendon; his history of the English Civil War is frequently referred to as 'Clarendon's Rebellion’. Philip Herbert was named after his uncle, the Elizabethan poet, Sir Philip Sidney, and he and his elder brother, William, were the 'incomparable paire of brethren' to whom the first folio of William Shakespeare's collected works was dedicated in 1623. At court, Herbert became a favourite of King James I and continued to receive royal favour after the accession of King Charles I in 1625. However, his Puritan sympathies prompted him to support Parliament during the first English Civil War. He was re-installed as Chancellor of Oxford University after Parliament's victory. George Vertue was an English engraver and antiquary. Sir Anthony van Dyck, famous for his portraits of King Charles I, his family and their courtiers, was a Flemish artist who became the leading court painter in England. D1321.B5756.A
