Join Blue Planet II Series scientific adviser Steve Simpson for an underwater acoustic adventure.A far cry from Jacques Cousteau’s Silent World, in reality the ocean is a remarkably noisy place, with whales, dolphins, fish and invertebrates all producing sounds to communicate. These range from the haunting song of the humpback whale song to the explosive clicks of snapping shrimp. They are important for social interactions, courtship, predator avoidance and locating and selecting habitat, especially at night. But since the industrial revolution we have been adding a whole raft of noises to the ocean, including shipping, motorboats, offshore construction, oil and gas prospecting and naval sonar. In this talk, Steve will explain how he has pioneered new ways of listening to the ocean and of interacting with fish (including underwater puppetry), to understand whole soundscapes and to unlock the language of fish. He will also discuss his engagement with key marine industries, aiming to reduce and manage human noise pollution in the quest for quieter seas. Steve Simpson is a marine biologist, fish ecologist and ocean optimist. His work combines data modelling, lab and aquarium-based studies, and fieldwork in coral reefs and coastal locations around the world. His main focus is on impacts of global change on fish, fisheries and marine ecosystems, including effects of climatic warming on European fisheries, influence of ocean acidification on fish behaviour, and impacts of anthropogenic noise on crabs, fish and whole ecosystems. Steve’s work on bioacoustics, including fish communication and soundscape mapping, was featured on Blue Planet II; a series for which Steve was also an academic adviser. Blue Planet II is a 2017 British nature documentary series on marine life produced by the BBC Natural History Unit. Like its predecessor, The Blue Planet (2001), it is narrated and presented by naturalist Sir David Attenborough, while the main music score was composed by Hans Zimmer
