The Cathedral Basilica National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Conceição Aparecida, also known as the National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aparecida, is a Catholic religious temple located in the Brazilian municipality of Aparecida, in the interior of the state of São Paulo. It is the largest Catholic temple in Brazil and the second largest in the world, smaller only than St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. It is the largest cathedral in the world, as the Vatican Basilica is not a cathedral. It is also the largest religious space in the country, with more than 143, 000 m² of built-up area throughout the entire Sanctuary. The structure was solemnly consecrated in 1980 by Pope John Paul II, when he visited Brazil for the first time. In 1984, the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) elevated the new basilica to a National Shrine. It is located in the city center, with access to the "Passarela da Fé", which links the current basilica with the old one, both visited by pilgrims. It has already been visited by three popes: John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis. In November 2016, by decree of Pope Francis, the basilica was elevated to the dignity of Church-Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Aparecida, title transferred from the Church of Santo Antônio, in Guaratinguetá. The sanctuary is visited annually by approximately 12 million pilgrims from all over Brazil. In 2017, the sanctuary registered 13 million visitors, the largest in its history.
