Turkish Cypriot villagers playing backgammon at the predominantly Turkish cafe In the background and on the other side of the square is the Greek Cypriot coffee house The mixed village of Pyla is situated entirely within the UN buffer zone where the boundaries of the Turkish controlled north Greek Cypriot south and Dhekélia British Sovereign Base meet It is one of the few places in Cyprus where Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots still live together Each community has a separate school and elected village official called a Mukhtar The village has both a mosque and a church two communal athletics clubs and two coffee houses serving each community Any breach of the law in Pyla is referred to respective legal adminstrations in the Turkish controlled north or Greek Cypriot south Pyla regularly draws peace activist who organise bi communal events there It also attracts the watchful eye of nationalists from both sides and that of the Turkish military watchtower situated on the fringe of the small village At the turn of the 20th century there were more than 300 mixed villages in Cyprus
