The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Mercy is a hermitage promoted as a sanctuary in 1907 that is dedicated to the patron saint of Maresme. It is located in a large patio shaded by the pine trees overlooking the town of Canet de Mar. It is one of the first important buildings built in Catalonia in the medieval neo-Gothic style. It is listed as a cultural asset of local interest (BCIL). This Sanctuary rises to the north of the town, joined to it by a walk. Since 1520 the devotion of a Marian image has been documented in this church. When the new church of the town was built in 1591, it became a sanctuary and hermitage. La Misericordia has been the patron saint of the town since 1703; in 1732 a new image was enthroned and in 1857 a new sanctuary, by the architect Daniel Molina, was blessed. In 1853 the first stone was laid. The temple suffered a fire in 1936 and the image was destroyed and reproduced after the war.
