Bali is in a constant battle to preserve their ancient texts written on palm leafs An island where its communities perform things—from daily social life to religious rituals—according to old and strong cultural traditions, Bali is also an island where the documentation of their ancient guidance, laws, wisdom and stories is second to none in Indonesia. Most of the documentation is written on palm leafs, a.k.a. lontar among the locals. Palm leaf manuscript is basically a dried palm leaf that is carved using a small knife served as pen, then colored with natural dyes. "Many lontars contain information on important issues such as medicines and village regulations that are used as daily guidance, including texts on religion, holy formulae, rituals, family genealogies, law codes, treaties on medicine, arts and architecture, calendars, prose, poems and even magics, " wrote a team of scientists led by Made Windu Antara Kesiman from Laboratoire Informatique Image Interaction (L3i), University of La Rochelle in their 2016 paper. However, the lontar manuscript is "rather difficult to created and understand. Balinese letters have some unique characteristic and patterns, " wrote another team of scientists led by Ayu Wirdiani (Departement of Information Technology, Udayana University, Bali) in a 2018 paper. The ancient lontars are considered as sacred as well. Therefore, only the elders can read and pass the information to their communities. It is also the reason why most of the lontars are stored (in wooden boxes) but never be opened. Efforts are performed by cultural and scientific institutions or some enthusiasts to preserve the information from the ancient lontar manuscripts, from rewriting on new palm leafs to digitalization. It is a constant battle.
