Sculpture of the Russian Empress Catherine II, in Tiraspol, capital of the unrecognized country of Transnistria. Tiraspol, a city in Moldavia on the eastern (left) bank of the Dniestr River, is the capital of Transnistria, from the prefix trans meaning beyond, and Nistru, the Romanian name for the Dniestr River, a de facto independent state proclaimed after the break-up of the USSR in 1991, not recognized by the UN, and which has since been at the heart of relations between Moldavia and the Russian Federation. Tiraspol and its Avenue du 25 Octobre, its many monuments and statues recalling the Soviet era, Lenin enthroned in front of the administration buildings, the great Catherine II of Russia in her garden, but also the many cats in the capital.
