Baccio Bandinelli created the statue starting from 1540, when it was commissioned by the whole was still far from being completed: the sculpture was thus placed in Palazzo Vecchio and here it became known as the "base of San Lorenzo" (see the nineteenth-century inscription on the base).Cosimo II by will of 1620 , while the monumental base remained for a long time in the Neroni chapel inside the basilica of San Lorenzo, then placed in the corner of the square in of Great Hall in the 15921560, for this reason the sculptor conceived the seated warrior (a rather unusual pose for a leader) above the base. The artist had presented the project to the duke in 1540 and signed a contract which provided for the statue of the leader and two reliefs inserted into the base to be completed within two years. In reality, when Bandinelli died in Basilica of San Lorenzo. Initially it should have been placed inside the Neroni Chapel inside the Medici , who thus wanted to honor his father, the only leader of valor in the entire history of the family Cosimo I de' Medici
