Duomo di San Viglio in Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: fresco on north wall of the north transept. According to legend, Julian was a nobleman with a hot temper. While out hunting, he had a vision that he would accidentally kill his own parents. One night, Julian’s wife let Julian’s parents sleep in the bed Julian shared with his wife. On returning home, Julian assumed that his wife was in bed with another man and killed his parents Full of remorse after the killing, Julian is said to have travelled to Rome with his wife to seek absolution. On gaining it, he redeemed himself by building hospitals and inns for the poor and needy. He was canonised as Saint Julian the Hospitaller and is now the patron saint of travellers and hoteliers. Work began on the Duomo di San Viglio in the 1100s. Then, in 1212, the first structure was almost completely demolished to make room for a cathedral in the Romanesque-Lombard style, built by a team of Campione-based skilled workers, headed by Adamo d’Arogno. In the 1300s, the cathedral was enlarged and Gothic features added. The cathedral is dedicated to Trento’s patron saint, San Vigilio di Trento or Vigilius of Trent (c. 353 - 405), a Roman patrician who was consecrated Bishop of Trent. D0191.A2274
