Anyone who’s visited Death Valley National Park knows that Artist’s Drive and especially its premier attraction, Artist’s Palette, is a big draw. An absolute plethora of minerals deposited by volcanism and subsequently oxidized when exposed to the air create quite the dazzling array of tonality. The light late in the day (but before it gets too late and casts the area into shadow from the terrain to the west) is about as good as it gets and we made it a point to visit late in the afternoon. I decided to leave my own shadow in this frame to provide a bit of scale. I also have another version of this with my own shadow in the bottom of the frame for a sense of scale.
