If I had to describe Bagan in 3 words, it would be "temples, temples, temples"! Between 11th and 13th century, 4446 Buddhist temples were built in Bagan, capital of Kingdom of Pagan, the first kingdom that unified regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar (Burma). Today, 3822 of these temples are still standing. Literally, there are temples as far as eye can see. Every day, while I was there, I would hop on the bicycle half an hour before sunrise and ride randomly around Bagan through early morning mist that was slowly being dispersed by the waking sun, just rising over the horisont. The scenery was surreal, I felt as I was riding through some long gone times, in some far out land.... However, the best way to see and appreciate Bagan in its entirety is from hot air balloon. Every morning, minutes before sunrise, over a dozen hot air balloons ascend to the sky simultaneously from the same place. The flight lasted 79 minutes and it was magical. Another great way to enjoy views of Bagan, especially at late afternoon and evening, was from the tops of tall temples. Unfortunately, since 2016 earthquake, authorities have strictly forbidden climbing of the temples, to the disappointment of photographers.
